Philip Bazaar was a Chilean-born American sailor who served in the United States Navy during the Civil War. Bazaar was born in Chile in 1836 and later immigrated to the United States in 1855. He joined the Navy in 1864 and served aboard the USS Santiago de Cuba.
During the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864, Bazaar displayed great bravery and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. He climbed to the crow's nest under heavy fire and despite being wounded, continued to perform his duties and relay vital information to his commanding officer. His courage and determination played a significant role in the Union victory at Mobile Bay.
After the war, Bazaar continued to serve in the Navy until 1889 when he retired as a quartermaster. He lived in Massachusetts with his wife Mary and worked as a carpenter until his death in 1918. Bazaar's Medal of Honor citation mentions his "extraordinary bravery" and he remains one of only a few Hispanic recipients of the medal.
